Ex-political detainee gunned down on his birthday in Tagbilaran City, Bohol Province, Phillippines

On 17 January 2008, Ronald C. Sendrijas visited his sister who just gave birth at the Ramiro Hospital in Tagbilaran City. At around 9:00 in the evening, he went out to buy medicine for his headache at Paz Pharmacy just across the hospital. At around 9:20 PM, as he approached the pharmacy counter, two men on board a motorcycle stopped in front of the pharmacy. The man riding on the rear of the motorcycle alighted and approached him from behind, put his arm around the victim’s neck and said, “Ronald”, as if to confirm his identity, then shot him twice at the back of his head with a 9-millimeter pistol instantly killing the victim. The perpetrators sped off to an unknown direction after the shooting. Ronald celebrated his 35th birthday on the day he died.

UPDATE: Farmer abducted, tortured, stabbed and left for dead by Scout Rangers in the municipality of Monkayo, Compostela Valley

On 12 December 2007, Renante Romagus was abducted by elements of the Scout Rangers at Purok 4, Brgy. Casoon, Monkayo, Campostela Valley. After receiving the report, KARAPATAN-Southern Mindanao Region through its secretary general Kelly Delgado organized a search team. On 18 December, Renante was found at the Davao Regional Hospital suffering from seven stabbed wounds.

Vice Mayor shot inside his office in the municipality of Dimasalang, province of Masbate, Philippines

At around 3:30 in the afternoon, Vice Mayor Regolo A. Moran had just got back in his office which is located at the ground floor of the municipal hall from the municipal council session held in the same building when two men in ski masks entered the room and started shooting him. Vice Mayor Moran wrestled with one of the gunmen but the other one shot him. The perpetrators fled on board a motorcycle. He sustained 3 gunshot wounds and died on his way to the Masbate Colleges Hospital, a 2-hour drive from Dimasalang.

KARAPATAN Human Rights Defenders harassed in Metro Manila, Philippines

On 2 November 2007, between 4:45-5:00 in the afternoon, Olivia Bernardo was sitting in the front seat of a passenger jeepney, on her way home. When the jeepney stopped at the corner of East Avenue and V. Luna St. for the red light, a motorcycle with no license plate stopped about two arms length away from the jeepney and the man on board the motorcycle angrily said to her, "Masyado kang nakikialam!" (You're meddling too much!) which caught her attention and prompted her to look in the man's direction. At this instance, the man brought out a camera, aimed it at her and took her picture, after which he sped off towards the direction of Epifaño De Los Santos (EDSA) Avenue.

Abducted daughters of slain peasant leader still in military custody

In the morning of July 3, 2008, Rose Anne Gumanoy and younger sister Fatima set out to meet their mother Maria in a mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa, south of Manila. They failed to reach their destination and instead sent an SMS (short message system) to their mother that they have been taken by soldiers.
