Karapatan position on various issues arising from the statements of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte

On peace talks with the NDFP

Karapatan fully supports the incoming President’s move to resume peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines(NDFP) and the release of all political prisoners unjustly jailed because of trumped-up criminal charges. We also urge the incoming President to pull-out the troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from communities and to junk the Aquino counterinsurgency program Oplan Bayanihan. We also urge President Duterte to immediately indemnify the victims of human rights violations under martial law.

On Duterte Appointments

Karapatan welcomes the appointment of progressives in the Duterte cabinet, but strongly disagrees with the appointment of Hermogenes Esperon as National Security Adviser and Ricardo Visaya as AFP Chief because of their bloody human rights record. The two were involved with several cases of human rights violations committed against the people.
On Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani

Karapatan does not agree to the planned hero’s burial for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. because he was a fascist who committed countless human rights violations, not worthy of any honor.

On media and extrajudicial killings

Karapatan stands against media killings, and the practice of extrajudicial killing against any individual. The right to due process should be respected at all times.
On Death Penalty

No to death penalty, in the context of the bankrupt justice system in the country that favors the rich and influential people. ###
