Rights group express joy on the sudden surfacing of the couple Manuel Pajarito and Juliet Fernandez after seven months of disappearance but also harbor serious doubts on their fate and ask that the military be held accountable for their illegal arrests and arbitrary detention.

The human rights watchdog KARAPATAN today welcomed the Court of Appeals decision implicating retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan Jr. on the abduction, torture and illegal detention of the Manalo brothers, as they reiterated calls to end impunity on human rights violations.

The human rights watchdog Karapatan (Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights) assailed Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for attributing the “drastic reduction” of political killings as among the achievements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines,saying it is an insult to the victims of rights abuses.

UPDATE: Farmer abducted, tortured, stabbed and left for dead by Scout Rangers in the municipality of Monkayo, Compostela Valley

On 12 December 2007, Renante Romagus was abducted by elements of the Scout Rangers at Purok 4, Brgy. Casoon, Monkayo, Campostela Valley. After receiving the report, KARAPATAN-Southern Mindanao Region through its secretary general Kelly Delgado organized a search team. On 18 December, Renante was found at the Davao Regional Hospital suffering from seven stabbed wounds.

Butuan City – Unable to deny the massive human rights abuses that drove the now almost 3,000 lumad and settlers to evacuate from more than 12 communities, the military has set its sights on Karapatan who is helping to expose the plight of the Surigao del Sur evacuees.

Vice Mayor shot inside his office in the municipality of Dimasalang, province of Masbate, Philippines

At around 3:30 in the afternoon, Vice Mayor Regolo A. Moran had just got back in his office which is located at the ground floor of the municipal hall from the municipal council session held in the same building when two men in ski masks entered the room and started shooting him. Vice Mayor Moran wrestled with one of the gunmen but the other one shot him. The perpetrators fled on board a motorcycle. He sustained 3 gunshot wounds and died on his way to the Masbate Colleges Hospital, a 2-hour drive from Dimasalang.

Today, International Human Rights Day, families of victims of human rights violations gather at the University of the Philippines grounds to confer to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the MEDALYA DE HORROR for being the No. 1 human rights violator in the country.

"For the victims and their families, this is the award Gloria rightfully deserves" declared Evangeline Hernandez, spokesperson of HUSTISYA, mother of slain activist Beng Hernandez.

2007 Human Rights Report: Only GMA ouster can improve human rights situation

The human rights watchdog KARAPATAN today renewed calls for the ouster of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in order to improve the human rights and overall situation in the country.
