Karapatan supports call of the Erecre family for peace consultant’s immediate release

In a statement released to the media, representatives of the Erecre family said, “Roy Erecre is ill. His eyes were blurring, too,”  adding he needs immediate medical attention especially with his age.

Inhuman and Degrading Prison Conditions

The case of Andrea Rosal exemplifies the dreadful situation in Philippine prisons and detention centers. Rosal is a woman political prisoner whose only offense, if one would consider it as such, is being the daughter of the late spokesperson of the Communist Party of the Philippines Ka Roger Rosal. She faces charges of murder and kidnapping with murder after she was arrested in Caloocan City on March 27. To make things worse for Andrea, 28, she is now in her full term and due to give birth to a baby girl anytime soon. This is her first pregnancy and she barely knows what to expect.

Jail the plunderers and release all political prisoners!

Calling to "Jail the plunderers and release all political prisoners!" Karapatan, SELDA and other human rights organizations today held a protest picket in front of the general headquarters of the Philippine National Police at the Camp Crame, Quezon City. Camp Crame is reportedly being prepared for the detention of legislators allegedly involved in the pork barrel scam.

AFP told to shut up and stop muddling the issue on the death of Andrea Rosal’s baby

Today, Baby Diona was buried without her mother Andrea Rosal. The Court prohibited Andrea to bury her own child for "security reasons".  Yesterday, she was only allowed to visit the wake of Baby Diona at the Cathedral of the Philippine Independent Church for three hours, and “with overkill security escorts”. Observers counted at least 40 escorts from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, mostly armed with high powered rifles.

Andrea Rosal was arrested together with Edward Lazanas on March 27 by elements of the National Bureau of Investigation for trumped up charges of kidnapping with murder.  Rosal was seven months pregnant during the arrest.

Why the Continuing Detention of Andrea Rosal is Unjust

Karapatan Monitor 2014 Issue No. 1

K Monitor 2014-1
In his grandest show as a puppet, Benigno S. Aquino rolled down the red carpet to welcome the head of the number one imperialist country, Barack Obama of the US of A. The combined proposed change in the Philippine Constitution with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the US government was BS Aquino’s gift to his real boss.

Statement of political detainee and NDFP peace consultant Roy Erecre

Let me convey my gratitude for the opportunity to respond to baseless allegations and malicious innuendoes hurled at me by the AFP and their patrons.

Immediately after abducting me in my hometown, this government has kept me incommunicado by transferring me from one detention cell to another across the seas until finally jailing me in Bohol where I once studied and then learned the necessity and worked for the realization of a systemic revolution.  In the crucial time following my abduction, government agents denied me the right to counsel, as they interrogated and threated and manhandled me. While locked up from public scrutiny, I was accused of trumped up charges and misrepresented as guilty felon through trial by publicity.

Solidarity for the Manobo people’s struggle for the protection of land rights, self-determination, and the environment

May 11, 2014

Dear fellow advocates:

Greetings of peace!

The Pantaron Range is a mountainous area that contains one of the last remaining primary forests in Mindanao, a part of our few remaining biodiversity corridors, and is a critical watershed for major river systems such as the Pulangi, Lasang and Davao rivers. It is ancestral home to thousands of Talaingod Manobo indigenous people, Lumads who gallantly defended Pantaron from big logging firm Alcantara and Sons (also known as Alson’s) in the 1990’s by organizing themselves into the Manobo federation, Salugpungan Ta Tanu Igkanugon (Unity in Defense of Ancestral Land; or, literally, 'a gathering {salugpong}for a land {tanu} that cannot-be-alienated [from us] {kanugon}').

In 1993, Datu Guibang Apoga, the chieftain of the Talaingod Manobos, united 83 different Manobo villages to rise against Alson’s and led a pangayaw, or a tribal declaration of war in defense of their lands, using traditional weapons against the company and its private security. The Pantaron struggle forced Alson’s to leave the area, thus preserving to date the flora and fauna of the Pantaron Range.

The current plight of the Talaingod Manabos

The Talaingod Manobos were forced on an exodus to Davao City away from their ancestral homes by a series of aerial bombings and intensified militarization by the combined forces of the 68th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army (IBPA), 60th IBPA of the 1003rd Brigade, and the 4th Special Forces under the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), which started on March 3, 2014.

Another case of mistaken identity as AFP ‘racketeers’ strike again

An environmentalist and anti-mining activist Romeo Rivera Jr., 53, now face at least four criminal charges filed against Felix Armodia, allegedly the Front Secretary of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army in Davao del Sur, South Cotabato, and Tulunan, North Cotabato.

10 years in jail on trumped up charges is too much, free Eduardo Serrano now!

Political prisoner Eduardo Serrano testified yesterday at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 97 to refute the false charges of kidnapping for ransom case filed against him. Serrano is the last witness slated to testify before the court finally resolves the case.  Eduardo Serrano is among the 14 peace consultants of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) who are currently detained. Atty. Rachel Pastores of the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) facilitated the direct examination of Serrano.
