Karapatan to Malacañang: do not trivialize Mindanaoans’ demands with name-calling

Karapatan condemned the arrest of Antonio Flores, 66, Secretary General of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and the violent dispersal of the Manilakbayan contingent who held a picket yesterday at the residence of BS Aquino at Times St., Quezon City. Farmers from Hacienda Luisita and those from Southern Tagalog joined the Manilakbayan in the protest. Flores is now detained at Camp Karingal in Quezon City.

"Not contented with Oplan Bayanihan's killing spree in Mindanao, the BS Aquino government has “slapped” more than 200 individuals with trumped up criminal charges," Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said in front of the Justice Department. "The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Department of Justice should stop persecuting well-meaning individuals taking part in the movement for change," Palabay continued. 

Karapatan joins Manilakbayan at Camp Aguinaldo to protest Aquino's Oplan Bayanihan

"The people in the pictures and the more than 300 Minadanaoans who are here in Metro Manila are proof that there is no peace in Mindanao," Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said holding the photo of Juvy Capion, a pregnant mother killed together with her two sons, Jordan and Janjan. Juvy is the wife of a Blaan leader, Daguil Capion who lead a pangayaw against the entry of Glencore-Xstrata-SMI in Kimlawis, Davao del Sur. Glencore-Xstrata-SMI, the biggest copper-gold mining project in the Philippines is known to give blood money to the 27th Infantry Battalion and Task Force KITACO.

They have come to tell their stories on how the Armed Forces of the Philippines sow terror in their communities. On the third day of the Manilakbayan contingent in Metro Manila, they already experienced how the Philippine National Police used force to drive them away and to protect the US Embassy.

Mothers of missing UP activists asked Court of Appeals to order Palparan back to BJMP detention

"The battle for Palparan's real detention maybe far from his long sought conviction, but the mothers of Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan do not compromise in every step of the way. And we are with them," Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said. Their group, with the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL), announced today that mothers Linda Cadapan and Concepcion Empeno filed last Thursday, November 20, a Motion for Certiorari to the Court of Appeals.

“The justness of the calls of the Manilakbayan ng Mindanao for food and peace is emphasized when on November 11, almost 400 individuals evacuated from Rosario and Bunawan, Agusan del Sur due to military operations of the 75th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army (IBPA). One was killed during said operation, while two remain missing,” said Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay.

Impunity is BS Aquino

"His government is shameless. He is impunity personified. His name is Noynoy 'Impunity' Aquino," Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said on the eve of the International Day to End Impunity, November 23.

“There is madness going on right before our eyes with witnesses and potential witnesses being killed one by one. The Ampatuans may be in jail but their power has not diminished. They are still able to silence witnesses. But what is BS Aquino government doing?" Palabay asked.

Release of political prisoner Miradel Torres sought

Karapatan today reiterated its call to release political prisoner Miradel Torres. The call for release has become more urgent now. Torres gave birth to a 2.8 kg. baby boy at the Philippine General Hospital yesterday at 6:31 p.m.

Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said, “Both Miradel and the baby boy do not deserve to be in jail. In the first place, Torres was jailed on trumped up criminal charges. The arrival of the baby gives us more reason to push for the release of Torres.”

Political prisoner Maria Miradel Torres, 26, is expected to deliver her baby today, November 19, 2014. She was brought to the Philippine General Hospital yesterday for a check-up but she was immediately admitted after undergoing medical examination.

Schools should be protected, not targeted

"The Lumad children from schools of indigenous peoples in Mindanao are confronting bullies who are stronger, bigger and more powerful—the soldiers encamped in their classrooms," Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said. Some 13 Manobo children whose schools were forced to close due to intense military operations in Talaingod, Davao del Norte today launched a month-long "Cultural Caravan" in Metro Manila.
