Karapatan hits bill to lower age of criminal responsibility as Sen. Sotto files it anew

“Karapatan reiterates its opposition on the bill lowering the age of criminal responsibility as Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III refiled it on Monday, July 1 despite strong condemnation from various groups and individuals when it was filed in the 17th Congress,” Jose Mari Callueng, Karapatan National Council member, said.

“In light of the Court of Appeals 14th Division’s dismissal of Karapatan’s amparo and habeas data petition, more cases of red-tagging have been reported in various parts of the country. Karapatan Central Visayas chairperson Phoebe Zoe Sanchez, also a professor in UP, recently received a death threat and women human rights lawyers in Mindanao were harassed in their home. People’s lives are on the line and the Duterte regime’s vindictive and fascist policies continue to fuel and fund the attacks directed at human rights defenders and progressive groups,” Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay said.

Karapatan protests CA’s dismissal of its amparo petition

On June 28, 2019, the 14th Division of the Court of Appeals dismissed the petitions for the writ of amparo and habeas data filed by Karapatan, Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP), and Gabriela. Karapatan assailed the decision and referred to it as “a gross disservice to the human rights defenders who continue to experience perilous conditions in the conduct of their human rights work.”
