New evidence on the enforced disappearance of University of the Philippines (UP) students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño and their farmer companion Manuel Merino prompted their mothers to file a writ of amparo before the Supreme Court at 9AM today, the first day the new law takes effect.

“We are grateful that the Supreme Court is making the remedy of the writ of amparo available for people like us whose daughters were abducted by the military,” said Mrs. Erlinda Cadapan, mother of Sherlyn.

Rights group and relatives of victims of human rights violations join Ayala rally to call for justice for mall bombing victims

The human rights group Karapatan and relatives of victims of human rights violations today joined the relatives of victims of the Glorietta 2 blast in arally at the Ninoy Aquino monument in Ayala Avenue, Makati, to express solidarity with them.

Karapatan, Hustisya and Desaparecidos called for an independent investigation of the mall bombing and prosecution of perpetrators as they continue to seek justice for other victims of human rights violations.

UN: Counter-insurgency strategy explains extrajudicial killings in Philippines

MANILA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations official has blamed the Philippine government's counter-insurgency strategy against leftist rebels as the reason for a large number of extrajudicial killings to have taken place in the country, according to a UN report published here on Sunday.

Philip Alston, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial killings in the Philippines, recently submitted a 21-page interim report to the 62nd UN General Assembly, which is entitled "Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions".

Rights group says GMA lying to UN on human rights situation, likens regime to military rule in Burma

In a press conference today in Quezon City, the Philippine NGO delegation that attended the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva denounced the lies being propagated by Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Karapatan Secretary General Marie Hilao-Enriquez said: "Telling the UN that the Arroyo regime respects human rights is a barefaced lie. The spate of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and other human rights violations is proof that Arroyo and her cohorts are human rights violators."

Rights groups call for investigation of mall bombing as they continue to seek justice for other victims of HR violations

Karapatan and Hustisya commiserate with the bereaved families of our eight compatriots killed and 89 injured in the tragic bombing of the Glorietta 2 mall yesterday.

As we gather today in Plaza Salamanca, Manila, to pay tribute to and demand justice for our loved ones, friends and compatriots who were victims of state violence, we likewise join the nation in seeking justice for the victims of the Glorietta 2 bombing.

We join the call for a thorough investigation, arrest, trial and punishment of those responsible for the blast.
