The killing of Miguel followed the March 7, 2021 Bloody Sunday incidents when nine activists were killed in the course of police and military operations in Southern Tagalog.

At least 54 workers in the public and private sectors, many of them unionists, have been killed under the Duterte administration, according to Karapatan’s documentation. We consider these killings as direct violations on the workers’ exercise of their right to organize unions and their freedom of association. It is likewise a consequence of the vicious red-tagging schemes of those in government, in their vile and desperate attempts to silence dissent amid the economic and political crisis faced by poor communities especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is detestable that this culture of impunity continues, but it is imperative that we relentlessly assert justice and accountability on these attacks against people’s rights.
