"The manner by which the two UP Clark students were abducted—without any warrant of arrest, blindfolded and denied access to their relatives and lawyers—bear all the signs of an illegal arrest, " Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Karapatan said today on the cases of Guiller Cadano, 22, and Gerald Salonga, 24, last August 8, 2014.
The two were reportedly abducted by elements of the 3rd Infantry Battalion from the 7th Infantry Division of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police Crime Investigation and Detention Group at Brgy. TL Padilla, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.
"Two days after the arrest, the two boys and the human rights workers assisting them have not seen any charge sheet or any order for their arrest. Just like the arrest of the Morong 43, the two were nabbed without any warrant. We fear that the legal requisites to keep them in jail are now being manufactured,” Palabay said.
In 2011, the 43 health workers known as Morong 43 were charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives, a non-bailable case, after more than a week of captivity in a military facility.
Karapatan also lambasted the “planted evidence” on Salonga and Cadano, saying these are “worn-out tactics of the military and police to justify illegal arrests. “
Cadano is a member of Pi Sigma Fraternity while Salonga is a member of Sigma Kappa Pi Fraternity both of UP Clark chapters. Cadano and Salonga are both youth organizers of Kabataan Partylist. They are now detained at the Provincial Police Security Jail in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. ###
