Karapatan says no need of another Marcos, ML imprints remain

Bongbong Marcos’ refusal to apologize for the crimes committed by the US-Marcos dictatorship and his endless attempt to deflect the issue of martial law are sure signs of danger.

“The lust for perpetual power to protect its own economic and political interests and that of the oppressive and exploitative class it represents, leaders turn out to be fascist monsters,” Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said in response to son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and vice presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos. The younger Marcos said his father’s martial law is not an election issue.

“Martial law and dictatorship is the height of a leader’s lust for power.  Therefore, it is an issue and a cause for concern as Filipinos choose their leaders in the coming elections. The question is still whose interests do these candidates represent?” Palabay said.

“If someone like BS Aquino—whose family was a victim of martial law—could easily take on the role of a fascist, what more of Bongbong who grew up in what he believed was the country’s glory years under martial law and dictatorship?”

BS Aquino, whose father Ninoy Aquino was illegally detained and later assassinated under martial law, has now become accountable for gross human rights violations committed against civilians and activists through his Oplan Bayanihan.

“Bongbong Marcos cannot run away from the bloody era that was martial law—no matter how he trivializes the sufferings of the people under his father’s dictatorship. We don’t need another Marcos in power because all the State machineries and laws that propped up the Marcos dictatorship and promoted the culture of impunity are still in place,” Palabay added.

“What we need now is to tear down all the remnants of martial law and no Marcos would ever do it, nor leaders who only hear the voice of the oppressors and exploiters,” Palabay concluded.
