Karapatan urges PH Congress to push for ICC investigation

Human rights alliance Karapatan urged the House of Representatives (HOR) to throw its support behind resolutions pending before the body calling on the Marcos Jr. government to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor in his bid to investigate killings related to the anti-drug war during Rodrigo Duterte’s mayoralty terms in Davao City and the early years of his presidency.

House Resolution No. 1477 filed by Congressional Human Rights Committee chair Rep. Bienvenido Abante and House Resolution No. 1393 filed by Makabayan lawmakers both call for government support for the probe.

Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay said, “These resolutions are  expressions of widespread public sentiment against the rampant killings and other human rights violations related to the war on drugs and the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators and their highly placed enablers like Duterte and his subalterns led by former PNP chief Bato dela Rosa.”

Palabay added that “given the failure of domestic redress mechanisms, the ongoing ICC investigation provides a glimpse of hope to victims of the anti-drug war and their families in their quest for justice and accountability.”

The House Justice Committee has reportedly scheduled a hearing today to discuss the pending resolutions.
