Political prisoner Eduardo Serrano laid to rest as a hero

With his family, friends and comrades in struggle, we grieved as we laid our beloved Eduardo Ka “Edikk” Serrano to rest on January 17, 2015 in his hometown in Camarines Sur.

Eduardo Serrano

The Philippine government may have forever silenced a noble man, but the grave injustice against Serrano only strengthened the resolve of the struggling Filipinos to fight for genuine peace and justice.

Serrano, a peace consultant for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines who spent his life with the farmers and Mangyan tribe on Mindoro island and the Bicol region, did not deserve to be in jail, and die as a prisoner because of fabricated charges.

The BS Aquino regime shunned away from peace talks with the NDFP and reneged on its commitment to release ‘most, if not all’ political prisoners, including the detained NDFP peace consultants. It continued to arrest more NDFP consultants, violating the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG). There are now 18 detained peace consultants, three of them convicted on false criminal charges. For spending most of his life with the marginalized sectors and helping them uplift their lives, Serrano deserves the highest honor. But the regime instead treated him like a criminal.

Ka Eddik persevered to become model revolutionary even in prison. We especially admire his positive disposition, his joy in helping and consoling others, even while in jail—sending  them his handmade crafts and cards. He befriended everyone regardless of background.  He upheld the rights of those in prison and supported the people’s mass actions in every issue through statements and symbolic actions inside jail.

With clenched fists, we say our final goodbye to our beloved comrade and friend. Rest assured we, human rights workers, and your friends and colleagues will fight till we bring justice for you and all political prisoners.

Paalam, Ka Eddik. Itutuloy naming ang ating laban!
