  Karapatan welcomes the proposal of presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to release all political prisoners through a general, unconditional and omnibus amnesty.   “This will partly give justice to the political prisoners, whose rights were violated,” said Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general.

Karapatan calls on presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider the planned appointment of Lt. Gen. Ricardo Visaya as Armed Forces Chief of Staff. Visaya is a protégé of Ret. Gen. Jovito Palparan, known as ‘The Butcher’ because of his bloodied human rights record.

As presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte prepares for the transition to assume the reins in July, Karapatan echoed the call to release all political prisoners and the resumption of the long-stalled peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GPH) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

Karapatan today called on the people to be vigilant of the maneuvers by the Aquino regime to ensure the victory of the Liberal Party candidates, the flag-bearers of the blood-stained “tuwid na daan.”

As he is laid to rest today, Karapatan conveys its highest esteem and tribute to His Excellency Most Reverend Julio Xavier Labayen, OCD and Prelate Emeritus of Infanta, who passed away in the morning of April 27, 2016 at the age of 89.

“With a few weeks left for BS Aquino’s presidency, the administration continues to reach for its targets on rights violations through Oplan Bayanihan, while desperately campaigning for Liberal Party bets to escape accountability,” Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general said.
