Torture survivors laud award-winning docu film on political prisoners in PH

,

The Samahan ng mga Ex-Detainee Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto (SELDA), an organization of former political prisoners, congratulates Jazrene Gonzales for winning the Excellence Prize at the Korea Gyeonggi International Film Festival for SDGs 2025 for her film “Silent Spaces.”

Gonzales’ film directorial debut “Silent Spaces” traces the story of SELDA Vice Chairperson Danilo dela Fuente, a former political prisoner and torture survivor under the Marcos dictatorship. It revisits the prison cells and torture sites where Dela Fuente was held, revealing “how these locations continue to echo with unspoken trauma.”

The film also portrays how Dela Fuente, as a martial law survivor, continues to pursue his activism, especially by calling for the release of political prisoners, recounting to younger generations the atrocities of martial law and fighting the historical revisionism being peddled by the Marcos Jr. regime.

“Silent Spaces” has also been officially selected by Lift-Off Global Network based in the United Kingdom, for their First-Time Filmmakers Session Volume 6 of the Lift-Off Film Festival. Lift-Off highlights the works of young independent filmmakers and emerging directors.
